Moraine State Forest—Lapham Peak Unit, Wisconsin
This Sandhill Crane took to flight from a nearby pond (I have some nice shots on the Birds page) and then it flew by me behind some trees that were just starting to leaf out Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/250sec f/5.6 at 170mm ISO-200 April 10, 2010 4:16pm |

Near the Milwaukee Marina, I saw this reflection in a pond and pulled over to shoot. Too bad I didn't have a tripod, but I still like it. Hand-held at 1/4 second! Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM 1/4sec f/2.8 at 33mm ISO-400 November 20, 2009 6:53pm |

Moraine State Forest—Lapham Peak Unit, Wisconsin
I found this spot for a car-shot, with the idea that I would stand next to it, an updated self portrait for my "About JHillmer.com" page, but I didn't bring a quick release plate for my tripod with me, Oops. So, just my CR-V that I use to get me to these locations Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM 1/60sec f/11.0 at 31mm ISO-200 October 24, 2009 4:21pm |

Street—Waukesha, Wisconsin
Quarterly, our city holds an Art Crawl, and on this night I was downtown admiring the various displays, when I saw the nearly full moon over one of the older historic buildings (I had to go get my camera and tripod, and it was worth it!) Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM 3.2secs f/4.5 at 28mm ISO-100 October 3, 2009 10:01pm |

Pelican—La Jolla,
California
I had about 2 hours after business meetings, for 2 days in March, to find and shoot what I could at the sea, beaches, and cliffs of La Jolla. I really like this Pelican that was coming in for a landing! This is as it was shot (this is not the product of a Photoshop effect) Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/25s f/14.0 at 150mm ISO-400 March 19, 2009 5:19pm |
![]() Our Back
Yard—Waukesha,
Wisconsin
We have two life-size deer in our back yard (both concrete and very heavy!). This past week it has been snowing a lot, and this shot shows the 15 or so inches of snow on the doe's back. Our squirrels sometimes perch on their backs in the summer Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/320s f/7.1 at 190mm ISO-100 December 21, 2008 11:42am |

South High School Stadium—Waukesha,
Wisconsin
During a half-time show, I was shooting pictures for the Marching Band, and caught a number of really sharp ones, and a few artsy ones too. Here's one of my favorites (this happens to be one of my daughters). This is as it was shot (this is not the product of a Photoshop effect) Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/13s f/5.6 at 285mm ISO-640 September 19, 2008 8:11pm |

Park Pond—Waukesha,
Wisconsin
I grew up by this field, that they made into a park, where they made this pond... where this green apple is floating in the weeds in the pond. I like this shot (most people will probably not), but the simplicity makes me smile each time I look at it Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/320s f/6.3 at 400mm ISO-100 August 23, 2008 5:23pm |
![]() Sandhill Cranes—New Berlin, Wisconsin On my way home from work one evening, I found these two cranes feeding in a somewhat flooded corn field that had not yet been planted, I stopped and watched them for a while. When they took off, I captured this motion shot (other shots of them are on my Wildlife/Bird pages). This is as it was shot (this is not the product of a Photoshop effect) Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/60s f/5.6 at 310mm ISO-100 June 25, 2008 8:02pm |

Park—Old Town

A Downy Woodpecker resting after it had been hammering away on some tree branches. It looks like a cuddly stuffed animal in this shot Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/250s f/5.6 at 400mm ISO-100 June 16, 2008 2:27pm |
![]() Young Sparrow—Founders Park—Old Town Alexandria, Virginia This is one of my all time favorite baby bird pictures. I was at a conference across the Potomac River from Alexandria, so each day after the sessions I took the Water Taxi over to the Old Town where the parks were quiet and one afternoon, I found this little guy stretching Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/125s f/5.6 at 400mm ISO-100 June 16, 2008 2:07pm |
![]() Fox River Bear—Waukesha, Wisconsin The Downtown River-Walk in Waukesha has 3 life-sized bear statues near the river. During the June 2008 flooding of the Fox River, this bear was completely under water Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/100s f/5.0 at 190mm ISO-100 June 11, 2008 4:55pm |
![]() Frame Park—Fox River Flooding—Waukesha, Wisconsin With the Fox River overflowing its banks, the paved River-Walk in Frame Park was underwater the night that I went down to see the mess (the river crested the next day about 9 feet above its normal level). Note, this shot had rain drops all over the place that were lit-up by the flash; I removed those with Photoshop Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, Canon 580EX 1/60s f/2.8 at 17mm ISO-400 with flash June 8, 2008 11:13pm |
![]() Barstow Street Dam—Fox River—Waukesha, Wisconsin In June 2008, the Midwest (including my home town, Waukesha) was drenched with rain for a few days. The Fox River crested at about 9 feet above its usual level. This was taken the night before it crested. The lights on the water are from TV camera crews that were looking at the dam which was completely underwater - usually there is a drop of many feet here (about 6-9 feet) but tonight, it was flowing nearly level Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM 2.5s f/2.8 at 17mm ISO-100 June 8, 2008 10:37pm |
![]() Robin in the Mirror—Waukesha, Wisconsin This bird saw itself in our front picture windows for a few weeks, and each day it flew up and attacked the mirrored image (many many times!). This became very annoying, but our cats had fun watching it Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM 1/400s f/8.0 at 105mm ISO-1600 April 5, 2008 11:07am |

Peninsula State
Park—Door County, Wisconsin
A shot of my son on a moped (red tail light), while I was riding another moped in the park (yes, it's legal to ride in the park, but maybe not while taking photos). Mopeds and bikes can be rented at a number of places in Door County, including Edge of Park, Inc., outside the entrance to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
