Wildlife and Nature Photography

Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter
- Ansel Adams, Photographer (1902-1984)
I enjoy landscapes, but have too many for one page, so I split them into a set taken West of the Mississippi River,
and into two sets taken East of the River (in the Midwest and Eastern states) - these East shots were taken
in the Winter

I spotted this scene about a 1/4 mile off, and shot a number of pictures as she trotted and played along this shrub line)

This clearing at the edge of the woods, in this late afternoon shot, a snowy day, became a playground for a handful of deer (you can see more of the deer on my Animal page)

Shot across the frozen pond near Homestead Hollow, the bench on the far side is a nice resting place in the summer and fall.  The red berries caught my eye against the snow-white background and dark trees.  This is one of my first gallery shots using my new 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens, and one of my last shots of 2008

Pewaukee Lake, Wisconsin
A big sunset over a frozen lake, zoomed to 400mm to maximize the size of the sun (this is not cropped).  I took many shots for about 1/2 hour framing the sun, the trees of an island, some ice fisherman, and  snowmobilers

18-20 inches of snow landed on Southeastern Wisconsin during the prior week. Today, we finally saw a sunny day (though the temperature with wind-chill was -25°F)

I was looking for deer, a pheasant, turkeys, maybe a hawk. I found nothing - it was too cold

I have always liked cat-tails, so I looked for a marsh to capture some of them, but it was too cold to do it right, so I just shot these small ones from the warmth of my car

This tree reminds me of Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree, what it might have looked like in the forest, before it was cut down and placed in the tree-lot for Charlie Brown and Linus to find

After searching for wild turkeys, on a cloudy afternoon, I took in the peaceful farm fields. I did find a field of wild turkeys, but they were out of the reach of my lenses and without the sun, there was no color to work with

The prior week I was here shooting in the snowy fog. This week I wanted the sunset, and had to venture out on the ice to frame this shot (it was windy and near 0°F on this late afternoon)
